Dollar Down, Gold Up in Europe
The U.S. dollar fell against most major currencies in European trading Thursday. Gold rose.
The euro was quoted at $1.2757, up from $1.2732 late Wednesday. Later, in midday trading in New York, the euro fetched $1.2757.
Other dollar rates in Europe, compared with late Wednesday, included 115.11 Japanese yen, down from 115.71; 1.2298 Swiss francs, down from 1.2316; and 1.1116 Canadian dollars, up from 1.1110.
The British pound was quoted at $1.8373, up from $1.8347.
In midday New York trading, the dollar bought 115.09 yen and 1.2296 Swiss francs, while the pound was worth $1.8373.
Gold closed in London at $629.30 bid per troy ounce, up from $620.30 on Wednesday.
In Zurich the bid price was $628.60, up from $619.95.
Gold fell $2.80 in Hong Kong to close at $624.00.
Silver closed in London at $11.42 bid per troy ounce, up from $11.24.
