The U.S. dollar fell against other major currencies in European trading Friday. Gold prices rose.

The euro was quoted at $1.2826, up from $1.2774 late Thursday. Later, in midday trading in New York, the euro fetched $1.2816.

Other dollar rates in Europe, compared with late Thursday, included 113.91 Japanese yen, down from 115.15; 1.2211 Swiss francs, down from 1.2282; and 1.1126 Canadian dollars, down from 1.1127.

The British pound closed at $1.8525, up from $1.8367.

In midday New York trading, the dollar bought 113.90 yen and 1.2218 Swiss francs, while the pound was worth $1.8507.

Gold closed in London at $631.40 per troy ounce, up from $629.30 on Thursday.

In Zurich, the metal closed at $631.75, up from $628.60.

Gold rose $6.30 in Hong Kong to close at $630.30.

Silver closed in London at $11.36 bid per troy ounce, down from $11.42.
